Thrashed - Solo Study

by Martin-Goulding | 02 November 2013

Here we have Thrashed, a solo study in the Thrash Metal style that gained popularity in the mid 1980’s with bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, Exodus and Overkill.

The style is based around fast palm muted downstroke rhythms, alternate picked and galloping open string riffs, with half time feel “mosh” sections and features fast blues based hammer-on and pull-off licks, alternate picking and an emphasis on bending and vibrato. Players in this genre are known for their stamina and picking accuracy, and the levels of fitness required will need to be developed over time.

Tone wise, this style is famous for its “scooped” riffing sound, and you will want to boost both the bass and treble to around 3 o’clock with the mid-range cut or “scooped” out almost completely to get a thick tone that responds well to open low string palm muting.

For the leads, try boosting the midrange to 2 o’clock, cutting back on the bass and treble (flat / 12 o’clock) which will help the tone to project through the backing rhythm guitars.
