Goodbye - Solo Construction - Part 1

by Andy-Constantinou | 27 February 2012

"Goodbye" covers a 20 bar solo over a punk/rock progression. The first aim of demonstration is some simple, yet effective pentatonic ideas and extra note choice. Another highlight is how to build your solo through "gears"’, building up to the fast flashy stuff, which is essential for a coherent & interesting structure.

I cover the use of pentatonic hybrids: incorporating the major 2nd, major 6th major 7th and also the Japanese Kumoi pentatonic.

Technique wise, this solo uses feel based playing; bends, vibrato & slides moving into using hybrid picking, legato and combining the techniques; string skipping & tapping. There is also a section after the solo for you to jam to and write your own solo ideas.

This lesson will help you develop:

  • Solo writing & progression
  • Pentatonic hybrids (note choice)
  • Feel; bending, vibrato & slides
  • Legato (hammer on & pull offs)
  • Hybrid picking triads
  • String skipping & tapping
